What to expect
On 1 March everyone gives and wears martenitsi, red-and-white woven charms, to greet Baba Marta (Grandma March) and the coming spring. You wear yours until you see a stork, a swallow or a blossoming tree, then tie it to a branch. The custom is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, and street stalls sell martenitsi from mid-February.
