What to expect
Veliko Tarnovo celebrates its city day on 22 March, marking Tsar Ivan Asen II's victory at Klokotnitsa. Traditionally the day opens with a liturgy at the Holy Forty Martyrs Church, followed by civic ceremonies, and the Sound and Light show is also staged that night. It's a proud local holiday and a good introduction to the city's medieval past.
