To drive on motorways and most main roads outside towns in Bulgaria, your car needs an electronic vignette (e-vignette). There is no sticker: it is linked to your number plate.

How to buy one
- Online at the official BG TOLL website or app. You need your number plate and country of registration.
- At petrol stations and border crossings.
- Buy it before you drive on a toll road: cameras check number plates automatically.
Use the official site. Many look-alike websites sell vignettes with a large extra fee. The official seller is BG TOLL.
Check your vignette
You can check any number plate on the BG TOLL website to see whether its vignette is valid and until when. Keep the confirmation email in case you are stopped.
Fines
Driving without a valid vignette on a toll road can bring a fine. You can usually settle it by paying a compensatory charge, but it costs much more than the vignette itself.
Common mistakes
- Typing the number plate wrongly, which makes the vignette invalid for your car.
- Buying from an unofficial site that charges a high fee.
- Forgetting that an annual vignette runs for a year from the day you choose, not the calendar year.

The vignette is needed on motorways and most main roads between towns. Streets inside towns and cities are free.
Foreign cars
If you drive in on foreign plates, buy a vignette before your first toll road. Many border crossings have a point of sale, but it is easier to buy online the day before. Good to know
- You can buy in advance and choose the start date. Useful for a trip next weekend.
- Changing your number plate means buying a new vignette for the new plate.
- Some disabled drivers can be exempt after applying. Check the BG TOLL website for the rules.
