Overview

Is Sofia right for you?

Sofia is where most expats in Bulgaria start. It has the widest choice of jobs, international schools, private hospitals and services in English, plus the country’s main airport with direct flights across Europe. It is also the most expensive city in Bulgaria, and the busiest.

The city sits at about 550 metres, below Vitosha mountain. You can ski or hike within half an hour of the centre, and the Rila mountains and Rila Monastery are an easy day trip. Summers are warm and dry, winters are cold and snowy.

Most expats live in the centre or the green districts to the south, near South Park and Vitosha. The metro links the centre with the airport, Business Park Sofia and the big residential districts, so you can live well without a car.

The downsides are traffic, winter smog on cold, still days, and higher rents. Offices are busier too, so plan for queues at Migration.

What expats like

  • The most jobs and English-speaking services in the country
  • International schools and a large expat community
  • Direct flights across Europe from Sofia Airport
  • Vitosha mountain for hiking and skiing, close to the city
  • A metro that reaches the airport and the business districts

What to know

  • The highest rents and prices in Bulgaria
  • Air quality can be poor on cold winter days
  • Heavy traffic at rush hour
  • Government offices are busier, so queues can be longer
