Overview

Is Ruse right for you?

Ruse is Bulgaria’s biggest city on the Danube. Its grand 19th-century buildings earned it the nickname “Little Vienna”, and it has a lively pedestrian centre, parks along the river and a university.

It sits right on the border with Romania. The Danube Bridge takes you to Giurgiu, and Bucharest, with its big international airport, is about an hour and a half away. For many expats that makes Ruse one of the best-connected cities outside Sofia.

Costs are among the lowest of any city on this site. Nature parks with rock monasteries are a short drive away, and the Danube is great for walks and cycling.

There are few jobs and services in English, and winters are cold and often foggy. It suits remote workers, families and retirees who want a real city at low cost.
